This popped up in my memories today and made me pause. From a young age, I had a strong work ethic and a deep belief in my ability. In high school, I won state science fairs, advanced to the international science fair two years in a row, and earned multiple scholarships and awards tied to my plant cancer research. At the time, the path ahead seemed clear. At 19, my life took a different turn. I became a mom. Everything shifted, including the direction of my life. Years later, I returned to school as a single mom, what the college world often refers to as an older than average student 😅, and earned a 4.0 at Dickinson State University. I earned my degree in psychology with a minor in sociology. That season required intention and discipline. I spent long nights studying, passed on weekend trips, and made deliberate choices about how I used my time. Not because excellence is required of everyone, but because it mattered deeply to me in that season and I chose to give it my full effort. That chapter gave me far more than academic achievement. It gave me structure, resilience, meaningful friendships, and relationships that continue to shape my life. I was also entrusted by leaders at Dickinson State University to represent the school and step into rooms I once had not imagined entering, including Washington, D.C., where during my time in college I advocated for causes close to my heart. Life did not unfold the way I originally planned, but it unfolded with purpose. Different did not mean wrong. It meant growth. College gave me the confidence to believe in myself and in what I was capable of. That confidence continues to shape where I am today and where I am headed. And the most important thing to come from all of it was you, BrookLyn. Tomorrow you turn 23, and you are the gift that changed my life forever. Every hard season, every pause, and every redirected path was worth it because it led to you. We are not tied to our past. We learn, we grow, and we move forward with intention. There is no timeline for becoming who we are meant to be.

The table was out. The chairs were coming. The sign was made. Apparently, “they don’t smell anymore” = open for business 😂 We slowed it down and talked about decorating them first, but I barely caught him before the front yard oyster shop opened. Christmas break was productive.
